The fusion engine was first theorized in the late 20th century. After many early failures, including the contamination of the Yucatan Peninsula it was finally perfected in 2035. The fusion generator being more powerful and cleaner than the nuclear power plant, and powerful enough to power provide enough energy to power a city of 3.6 million making it a staple of all regions of Terra as well as off-world industries for 500 years.
Within a decade of the fusion engine making its way into production as a source of energy, smaller versions were created that could be placed into military vehicles as a clean power source that would provide almost unlimited energy.
The power of the fusion generator makes it a dangerous target as well as a valuable one. On planets with more restrictive governments, the fusion generator is not allowed to be built near residential or military areas. The blast from a generator meltdown can be devastating. The danger of explosion means that it is commonly isolated; this isolation makes it more difficult to defend and air defense is imperative.
The easiest way to disable the power generator is to knock out the cooling system. The coolant needs to be circulated near the exterior of the building making it vulnerable to attack. The draw back is that within 180 seconds the generator goes ‘super nova.’ The blast radius from this explosion extends up to 15 miles.
This blast commonly takes out the attacking forces as well as the defenders making it a dangerous target.
